Registration to BS EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
Achievement :- To be the first deep sea container terminal to achieve registration to the above standard.
The standard BSEN ISO 14001 is an international standard that enables organisations of any size to control the impacts of their various activities on the environment. It provides companies with a structural approach to setting environmental objectives and targets and allows businesses to demonstrate their achievements that are required by the standard and audited by outside agencies. Inherent in the system is the requirement to show continual improvement that must be demonstrated at regular assessments.

Without a Management System which is integrated within overall management activities, the localised environmental review and internal audits cannot assure management that its performance is or will continue to meet legal and policy requirements. During the initial phases of introduction and compliance to the standard companies must ensure that they have in place:- An Environmental Policy, An Understanding of the Environmental Aspects and Impacts of their operation, Register of all relevant Legislation, An organised Management System with clear lines of responsibility. A method of analysing environmental incidents and system for corrective action and a means for Management to review periodically the adequacy, suitability and effectiveness of the system.

The benefits from this system allows for the identification of operational cost saving areas and by setting Objectives and targets cost saving areas become more simply defined and correction becomes set by targets. It is also a marketing aid, as more and more companies are looking to do business with Environmentally Aware companies.

Waste Recycling
One area covered by the Environmental Management Programme is the review and audit of the type and quantity of waste. The objective set was to reduce by volume, wherever possible the quantity of Company waste sent to land fill and increase the amount of waste which is recycled as well as the requirement to comply with the Waste Management (Duty of Care) Regulations.

As a consequence of this requirement various waste contractors were contacted with regards to recycling issues. Rather than have numerous skips on site that could be used for various recycling products with the difficult of ensuring that personnel put the correct items in each skip. A Contractor was found that would take all site waste to his recycling centre and sort waste on his premises, prior to on forwarding the remnants to land fill. As a result the Terminal reduced the number of skips required and achieved as a minimum a recycling rate of 40% of all its waste. As a consequence of this, regular auditing of the waste produced by the company was introduced.
